about the author

I am a reader, writer, and designer – usually in that order – though I don't see much point in trying to distinguish one activity from the next and rather like the way they blur together. When I’m reading, I am inevitably writing. When I’m writing, I am often designing, and so on.

As an undergrad, I studied Physics and English. If the purpose of physics is to study the world, the purpose of criticism is to study how we talk about the world. They are, as such, complementary forms of knowledge, and I’m grateful to have been introduced to both.

Afterwards, and without really intending to, I became a designer. Design combines elements of literary criticism with the physics of geometry and scale and has allowed me to continue to play in the spaces between disciplines.

Since 2000, I have worked at W. W. Norton & Company, where I am currently Creative Director for College Books. I live in Brooklyn.
