Blackfish City

by Sam J. Miller

Qaanaaq is a floating Arctic city ruled by a group of invisible shareholders in the wake of the climate wars. Inequality is—predictably—rampant, and while some people live lavishly, others are lucky to be crammed into sleeping pods at night. Meanwhile, a mysterious illness known as “the breaks” is spreading among the populace, bringing with it strange mental breakdowns. Then one day, a woman arrives riding an orca and traveling with a polar bear. The tale that follows is delightfully ridiculous, as the “orcamancer” brings together a ragtag group of residents and drives them to a spectactular undertaking that’s partly an escape, partly a remaking of the city itself.
