This concise and cogent book offers clear and accessible guidance on what it means to do tech work in the public sector. Harrell is particularly keen on explicating the difference between civic tech work and tech work in other industries, helping to root out any biases you may need to shed before transitioning from the private sector. I found a lot of parallels to doing tech work in media here—especially with respect to resource constraints and the need to build partnerships across an organization—as well as lots of new context. The next person tempted to use their spare time to magic up an app that will fix their local government would do well to read this first.
