Akata Warrior

by Nnedi Okorafor

The second book in Okorafor’s Akata series finds Sunny settled in to her new magical school, observing the changes in her body as she grows and becomes stronger. When her spirit face, Anyanwu, becomes inexplicably separated from her, she and her friends sneak off in search of the truth about who she is. As with Binti, the Akata series centers on the ways a young woman becomes transformed while remaining loyal to her family, learning along the way that her family was more complicated than she assumed. (I’m not one for young adult books generally, but these were delightful and I hope there are more to come.)
