Ethan Marcotte’s invention of responsive web design changed the web for the better. His clear technical guidance informed countless developers and designers, many of whom would go on to build on his techniques and drive the practice further. But more importantly, Marcotte created a story of what it means to design for the web that the entire industry adopted and retold and tells still. That story is one where everyone, on every device, and with any kind of abilities, can read and use the web. As with the best stories, it’s an aspiration, but it’s a good one, we must continue to reach for it.
