Ancillary Justice

by Ann Leckie

The first in Ann Leckie’s Imperial Radch series introduces Breq, an AI who once inhabited a starship and many of it’s formerly-human crew. Breq’s ship was destroyed by the tyrannical Lord of the Radch, leaving Breq with just one body and an unfathomable grief. While this and the subsequent books are plot-driven and fast-paced, Leckie’s real brilliance is in the many small details of the Radch galaxy. Among them: the Radch have no concept of gender, so Breq refers to everyone as “she,” a remarkably affecting choice.
